Playlists & Poetry

Often I find inspiration in music and poetry.  I love to share new authors, composers and singers during class.  Below are playlists from class, poetry read during practice or even some of the Yoga Sutras.

Swan

Mary Oliver

Did you see it, drifting, all night on the black river?

Did you see it in the morning, rising into the silvery air,

an armful of white blossoms,

a perfect commotion of silk and linen as it leaned

into the bondage of its wings: a snowbank, a bank of lilies,

biting the air with its black beak?

Did you hear it, fluting and whistling

a shrill dark music, like the rain pelting the trees,

   like a waterfall

knifing down the black ledges?

And did you see it, finally, just under the clouds-

a white cross streaming across the sky, its feet

like black leaves, its wings like the stretching light

  of the river?

And did you feel it, in your hear, how it pertained to everything?

And have you too finally figured out what beauty is for?

And have you changed your life?

Danna Faulds - an excerpt

- From Root To Bloom

Experience the expansion, the spaciousness that comes from resting in the truth of unknowing.  It isn't comfortable, at least now now, but it is powerful and inherently creative.  It's what your soul longs for.  Use the sense of vertigo to leave behind the known, and let go of the need to tether your soul to anything solid or definable.  Let yourself go, over and over, until it is second nature to be weightless.

Birthright

- Danna Faulds

Despite illness of body or mind,

in spite of blinding despair or

habitual belief, who you are

is whole.  Let nothing keep you

separate from the truth.  The soul,

illumined from within, longs to

be known for what it is.  Undying, untouched by fire or the storms of life, there is a place inside where

stillness and abiding peace reside.

You can ride the breath to go there.

Despite doubt or hopeless turns of

mind, you are not broken.  Spirit

surrounds, embraces, fills you from

the inside out.  Release everything

that isn't your true nature.  What's

left, the fullness, light, ad shadow,

claim all that as your birthright.
